"Bistro Vis a Vis a potential gem"

Marin IJ, 23 June 2010

Wine is the focus... So often by-the-glass choices are mediocre and safe, with more adventurous and interesting selections available only by the bottle. Here no one gets left out, and the incentive to try new varietals and vintages is greater than ever...

And then there's the food. Though the menu has a bistro sensibility, it also features a few Italian favorites, some Asian dishes and even fish tacos...

On a recent visit we sampled memorable truffled risotto cakes ($8). Three generous rounds of perfectly cooked Arborio rice infused with earthy truffle oil and served aside a mound of lightly dressed arugula, fresh fennel, orange slices and red pepper couldn't have been better. My attempt to merely "taste" these creamy parmesan packed disks didn't succeed, and not a leaf or ribbon of fennel was left on the glistening white china. An equally finessed dish of jewel beets, baby spinach and chevre ($9) followed, and again I was impressed by the crisp, bright flavors and solid execution of another fresh, flavorful dish...

I opted for the less obvious choice of fish tacos, and though slightly pricey at $17, the lightly fried chunks of cornmeal-breaded fish, crispy red cabbage and a zesty lime cilantro had me once again licking my lips. So much for the doggie bag... an exciting addition to Greenbrae. Whether it's a glass of wine at the intimate bar, or a sit-down meal at one of the 10 or so tables or banquette, it's all here.
